In May 2019, the James Bowie High School World Guard will be the first and only United States group to perform in WGI Sport of the Arts’ inaugural WGI China Regional, held in Beijing. “We could not be more excited about our travels and upcoming performance in Beijing,” says Joey Powell, James Bowie HS Color Guard Director. “This experience will enrich the lives of our students at Bowie, and we are more than thrilled to represent WGI and the state of Texas!”
To take part in this historic trip to China, each student in the 2019 Bowie World Guard is paying nearly $3,000 in travel fees. But that alone will not cover all of the costs associated with this trip. The Bowie Band Boosters aims to raise at least $30,000 for:
Travel and visa costs for guard and instructional staff
Prop and equipment shipping
Funds raised above our goal will help lower each student's individual trip cost.
Bowie Guard has a proud history of multiple state and regional championships, and is the only Texas high school World Guard to earn consecutive Top 10 national finishes at the WGI Championship. We look forward to growing the Guard program as it contributes to the success of the James Bowie Outdoor Performing Ensemble each fall and Winter Guards each spring.
Special thanks to our partners at the Austin Chapter of the Asian Pacific Islander American Public Affairs Association for their help in sponsoring Bowie Guard's trip to WGI China! Bowie Band Boosters are also proud to be members of the Greater Austin Asian Chamber of Commerce.
